Brass and Bronze
Copper and Copper based alloys are commonly referred to as Red Metals. An alloy refers to two or more metals that have been melted together to form a material with specific properties. All Brass and Bronze are alloys. Red Brass commonly refers to Copper/Tin alloys, Yellow brass typically refers to Copper/Zinc alloys and Bronze may contain various combinations of Copper, Zinc, Tin and Lead. Some specialty alloys may also contain manganese, nickel and aluminum but may also contain percentages of other metals. The challenge for a recycler is to identify and segregate scrap into the proper alloy groups.

Metal Identification
Old school recyclers relied upon experience and metallurgical knowledge, armed with a pocket magnet and a jack knife or metal file to visually classify materials. More in depth identification was performed by spot testing with acid or drilling into a sample to see the properties of the turnings.

In todays digital world, hand held spectro analysis tools can quickly identify the contents of any sample, relying on technology rather than the art and skill of the old school recycler.
